Product Description
The infant management concepts presented in this book have found favor with over two million parents and twice as many contented babies. On Becoming Babywise brings hope to the tired and bewildered parents looking for an alternative to sleepless nights and fussy babies. The Babywise Parent Directed Feeding concept has enough structure to bring security and order to your baby's world, yet enough flexibility to give mom freedom to respond to any need at any time. It teaches parents how to lovingly guide their baby's day rather than be guided or enslaved to the infant's unknown needs. The information contained within On Becoming Babywise is loaded with success. Comprehensive breast-feeding follow-up surveys spanning three countries, of mothers using the PDF method verify that as a result of the PDF concepts, 88% breast-feed, compared to the national average of only 54% (from the National Center for Health Statistics). Of these breast-feeding mothers, 80% of them breast-feed exclusively without a formula complement. And while 70% of our mothers are still breast-feeding after six months, the national average encourage to follow demand feeding without any guidelines is only 20%. The mean average time of breast-feeding for PDF moms is 33 1/2 weeks, well above the national average. Over 50% of PDF mothers extend their breast-feeding toward and well into the first year. Added to these statistics is another critical factor. The average breast-fed PDF baby sleeps continuously through night seven to eight hours between weeks seven and nine. Healthy sleep in infants is analogous to healthy growth and development. Find out for yourself why a world of parents and pediatricians utilize the concepts found in On Becoming Babywise.

1 out of 5 stars I intend to burn my copy   September 6, 2010
Colin's Mom (Maryland)
I bought this 7 years ago in desperation to get some sleep while my husband was commuting to Chicago all week for work. Schedules are a good thing, right? I just found the copy and intend to burn it. The concept that a newborn "can decide on its own to play instead of cry during the allotted "play time" is absolutely absurd! This method assumes that a baby has much more mental and psychological abilities than possible for the age. I think that a lot depends on temperament for success and even so...a baby needs its parents. He/she deserves to have the love and attention to guide it into the world. Not given a VERY STRICT schedule and expected to cope. I could not ever feel right for the copy I purchased to ever ever ever land in anyone's hands. It's my review and I will say that it borders 'cruel'. I refuse pass it on to another infant's experience. Try other more compassionate methods to get your baby on a schedule.

1 out of 5 stars NO HELP AT ALL. Extremely vague answers from an author w/ questionable credentials!   September 6, 2010
Dudes (Santa Barbara, CA USA)
I read this book when my son was a month old and TRIED to implement their tactics. This book has all kinds of vague instructions to "teach" us how to teach our infants to sleep through the night with putting them on a nap and feeding schedule. Well, let me clue you in.... the book says to let your baby cry it out for 15-20 mins... OK, no problem but at what age exactly do you do that?!?! My son is 1 month old and I'm NOT going to let my 1 month old "cry it out" for 15-20 mins! So are they talking about a 1 month old, a 6 month old or a 1 year old??? Call me crazy but at 1 month old this is the time for bonding. Not a time for "teaching" how to eat and nap on a schedule! If that's what it takes to *force* my newborn to sleep through the night by 8 weeks, no thank you! I read and re-read this book SO many times thinking I MUST be missing something. I finally threw this stupid, worthless book out! The other tactics of "scheduling" (although they don't call it that) are extremely harsh and left my son hungry, upset and NOT sleeping AT ALL because of it. P.S. I have read that the author Gary Ezzo, M.A. "only earned a high school diploma and masters of arts in ministry"... You make up your own mind about it. Good luck.

5 out of 5 stars Solid, Logical, and Proven Parenting   September 5, 2010
HappyMama
I was incredibly skeptical of Babywise initially. I thought "Moms are just always tired and babies determine when they sleep through the night, etc." However, Babywise totally tranformed my thinking on this topic and many more. Even after reading the books and deciding with my husband that we were going to try this, I was still thinking "Let's just see if our son really sleeps through the night at 6 weeks." Sure enough, he did! Now the key with this type of parenting, as the authors mention repeatedly, is to use common sense. If your baby is going through a growth spurt, in pain from teething, etc. You make exceptions. The Ezzo's are big on not letting the clock determine your parenting (being a slave to the schedule). You use your common sense and think about what your baby is needed. Our son is 10 months old, doing wonderfully and is still on his schedule (adjusted for his age of course) and sleeping through the night. You'll see comments about babies having failure to thrive and other things like that. It is incredibly unfortunate. The Ezzo's are not suggesting you be a tyrant with the schedule. They are suggesting you use it as a roadmap alongside your common sense. If your baby is having feeding issues, of course you should contact your doctor. They key is being consistant. If you're willing to put in some effort on the front end, you're going to get so much out of it in the end! I'm grateful to the Ezzo's for the books in this series. They have created such helpful and timeless princples for us to practically use.

5 out of 5 stars great book for ideas but didn't follow it   September 2, 2010

my baby had his own ideas about eating and sleeping so nothing in this book worked out for us. however, i do think it is a good read to have some goals and get some ideas as to how life will go the first few months.

5 out of 5 stars The one and only!   August 22, 2010

Throw away all the other baby instruction books!! This book is the best at helping get your baby to sleep through the night! Because I followed the principles given in this book, my son has slept through the night since 9 weeks old (he is 7 months now). A true life saver for me! He is the happiest baby ever and so am I!!
